Karate is a striking martial art that emphasizes punching, kicking, blocking, and throwing. It focuses on developing physical and mental discipline, self-control, and respect. There are various Karate styles (Shotokan, Goju-Ryu, etc.), each with its own emphasis on power, speed, or control. Karate practitioners are called karateka.
Origins
Karate originated in the Ryukyu Kingdom (present-day Okinawa, Japan). The exact date is unknown, but its roots can be traced back to the 14th century. Modern Karate as we know it developed in the early 20th century.
