Gatka is a traditional martial art form associated primarily with the Sikh community of Punjab, India. It emphasizes the use of wooden sticks (gatta) to simulate swords and other weapons. Gatka training incorporates not only combat techniques but also discipline, agility, and spiritual development.
Origins
Gatka originated in the Punjab in the 15th century. It was employed in the Sikh wars and has been thoroughly battle-tested. It originated from the need to defend dharma but is also based on the unification of the spirit and body.
Competition Formats
The National Martial Arts Championship 2024 allows the following Gatka format:
- Single Soti (Men and Women)
- Free Style (Team and Individual)
- Soti-Farri (Men and Women)
- Free Style (Team and Individual)
